The world is a huge bookshelf
OK… now I have to blog about this. because someone already wrote about this. If anybody interested in it, please leave comment and help me to make it real.
Here is the wiki on barcampbangkok.org
How it comes in my mind
I, @31o5 always wanted to get technical/non-technical books in Bangkok. Japanese techie books are expensive, and also even novels I can’t find what I want to read. However, there are so many Japanese techies in Bangkok, so I’m sure there are a lot of “used” techie books.
It’s been in my mind for few years already, thinking about some kind of networking system to share/exchange books. I blogged about it several times, but in Japanese.
First idea was making “Hackerspace” or “Geekhouse” or shared bookshelf, however it’s hard for everybody to come over to the place, and need someone to manage. It’s lots of work to do.
2nd idea, maybe we can leave books at cafe or restaurant, and people who want it come to the cafe to pick it up. Talking to owners of the cafe/bar/restaurants, and make kind of logo for it.
Then now, I thought of an Idea, we can do this at #BarcampBKK3, if it works well, we can spread it all over the bangkok, or world. It’s like “BNE”.
I always think, books should belong to society, I’d never wanted to throw books away.
This is an idea I’ve been thinking for a long time. Here is what in my mind. We can try this at #BarcampBKK3, aren’t we?
Concept
Books – in other words, knowledge or data, should belong to the society. When you finished reading a book, and if you don’t need it anymore, you can pass it to someone who needs it.
However, people you can pass it to are limited. How many of your friends have the same taste of books as you have?
Books, bunch of paper, it should be recycled, but it’s worth enough re-using by others, not to become a roll of tissue.
How it works?
It connects people online and offline. You can be totally offline, but also you can track the book, where the book is now, who was the ex-owner etc. You might be able to find someone who has the same taste of reading as you have, the one could be a good friend of you.
Start socialbookshelf
- Sort out your bookshelf and find some books you don’t need anymore.
- Stick “socialbookshelf.org” sticker on the books to make those belong to the world, not only you.
- Leave the book at a cafe, bar, pub, restaurant or salon… somewhere people would need something to read.
- Now the book is on the bookshelf called “WORLD”
If you find any book of socialbookshelf
- You might find an interesting book in a cafe, which has “socialbookshelf” sticker on it.
- If you like it, you can take it home and read and enjoy.
- When you finished reading, re-lease to the society, leave somewhere else, doesn’t have to be the same place.
- You may start your own books make it social with sticking the sticker.
I made stickers for books and shop owners, also made phase schedule etc, but now I have some more ideas, gonna change it and upload soon…
Now the idea become little big, if anybody interested in this, please help me to do this.

http://www.bookcrossing.com/
There’s already 124 members in Bangkok:

There were 5 books released here in the last 30 days:
http://www.bookcrossing.com/hunt/70/travel_-ThailandWhy start anew? (“It’s fun” is a legit answer ;-> )
31o5 added these pithy words on Jun 03 09 at 1:04 amNo.1 – just for fun.
No.2 – I didn’t know about bookcrossing when i got socialbookshelf.org domain.
No.3 – I needed to do something not WORK, and wanted to develop something by myself.books can belongs to both, i think.
enjoy reading :)
Jean Jordaan added these pithy words on Jun 05 09 at 7:00 pmYes, can study bookcrossing and look for ways to improve on it, look for aspects it doesn’t cater for .. and look for integration possibility. Maybe socialbookshelf can accept BCID (bookcrossing ids), or can register any new book not already on bookcrossing there as well.
